The German Research Foundation (DFG) funds the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1382 on the following topic:

“The Gut-Liver Axis – Functional Circuits and Therapeutic Targets”

The aim of the CRC is to better understand the complex interactions between the gut and liver and to develop new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of liver and intestinal diseases. The interaction of the intestine and liver is based on multiple linkages at anatomical, cellular and molecular levels. Venous blood is transported from the intestine to the liver via the portal vein and products formed in the liver enter the intestine via the bile ducts. Endocrine messengers, cytokines, bile salts, migrating immune cells and products of the microbiota thus link both organs with each other.

The Institute for Experimental Molecular Imaging (ExMI) at Uniklinik RWTH Aachen and the Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University is specialized on the research of several diseases using innovative imaging techniques. We offer a position in an exciting, scientific work atmosphere within a highly topical and clinically relevant field. The candidate will work within the joint research project “Gut-Liver Axis – Functional Circuits and Therapeutic Targets”. This interdisciplinary project aims to gain a better understanding of the complex interactions between intestine and liver to develop new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of liver and intestinal diseases. This research project mainly focuses on the non-invasive characterization of bowel and liver tissues using magnetic resonance imaging, CT, as well as molecular and optical imaging.
