To meet our growth challenges, WSP is seeking a Lead/Senior Substation Protection & Control Engineer to join our National Electrical Team, located in one of our Ontario offices in Thornhill, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Toronto, Ottawa or Kitchener .

As the Lead/Senior Substation Protection & Control Engineer, the successful candidate will work on projects with our Energy Team, addressing client needs and challenges. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise and consulting experience in T&D projects related to substations, including greenfield and brownfield projects, high-voltage utility systems, and renewable energy interconnection projects. This role involves collaboration with clients and stakeholders to ensure project success, timely delivery, and adherence to quality and safety standards. The position is part of the Transmission and Distribution market sector of the Power Division, focusing on electricity transmission, working with both public and private clients on innovative projects, offering opportunities for professional growth and mentorship.

What you can expect to do:

  • Review existing protection schemes to incorporate into new designs, focusing on anti-islanding, generator intertie settings, SPS schemes, etc., ensuring existing protections are maintained during modifications.
  • Lead and supervise protection design for capital projects, defining relay protection functionalities in line with client standards.
  • Review relay settings, logic diagrams, and operational descriptions provided by contractors.
  • Perform relay coordination analysis, considering project impacts on system performance and fault duty.
  • Review relay settings for temporary builds and construction phases, including mobile settings.
  • Support Aspen model updates for projects as needed.
  • Provide design support during implementation, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Contribute to standards refinement and ensure proper documentation filing.
  • Lead automation and integration design efforts, review SCADA point indexes, HMI screens, protection settings, and data maps.
  • Develop operational descriptions for substations and oversee data gathering processes.
  • Manage project licenses, firewalls, and automation deliverables.
  • Ensure constructability, automation coverage, and maintain good relationships with internal teams, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Exercise ethical decision-making and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional duties as required by business needs.

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
  • Professional engineering license (P.Eng) required.
  • Minimum 10+ years of relevant experience in electrical engineering, power systems protection, and control, preferably in consulting.
  • Experience with voltages up to 735 kV.
  • Proficiency with engineering design tools like ETAP, Aspen OneLiner, EasyPower, PLS-CADD, SPIDAcalc, etc.
  • Strong self-leadership, attention to detail, results-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, maintaining project ownership.
  • Effective communication skills for remote teamwork via MS Teams, email, and phone.
  • Proven commitment to workplace safety and adherence to health, safety, and harassment policies.
  • Flexibility to work beyond typical hours if needed; occasional travel may be required.
