In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic objectives of the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority (VCH), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.Reporting to the General Counsel the Director, Negotiations leads a coordinated approach to the negotiation of complex clinical service contracts and provides expert advice to various internal partners including operational and corporate partners, on sustainable and cost-effective service models. The Director works with external system partners including representatives from other Health Authorities, the Ministry of Health (MoH), and the Health Employers Association of British Columbia (HEABC), to define contract negotiation parameters, and ensure that VCH negotiation practices are aligned to acceptable provincial standards. The Director works closely with leadership across Medical Affairs, Legal and clinical service areas to develop, implement, and evaluate processes for the planning and coordination of clinical service contracts negotiations.The Director demonstrates exceptional communication skills to build strong working relationships with provincial partners; earn the confidence of senior health authority leadership; establish trust with physician groups; and influence provincial conversations. As a Director, Negotiations, Medical Affairs with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:
- On behalf of VCH, and in partnership with the Senior Director, Medical Contracts and Compensation Strategies, the VP, Medicine & Academic Affairs, and General Counsel, supports in the negotiation of complex contracts, including but not limited to the Physician Master Agreement (PMA), together with external, Ministry and internal partners, in keeping with applicable organizational, college and provincial standards, guidelines, values, and policies.
- Represent VCH in complex medical staff contracting negotiations regarding compensation, support, and contract deliverables with attention to patient care population interests and needs.
- Foster and build internal department negotiation skills and approaches in others, and acts as an internal mentor and coach to build organizational knowledge, skill and capacity.
- In alignment with organization and service goals, foster and maintain partnerships with identified leaders such as VCH Vice Presidents, Senior Medical Directors, Department Heads, Operations Leaders, other program leaders, community partners, and regional counterparts to ensure consistency and transparency with respect to contracted medical services.
- Develop strategic, progressive, creative and innovative solutions with a focus on improving the sustainability and cost effectiveness of clinical service delivery.
- Create a shared vision and commitment to a contract negotiation vision by employing consensus building frameworks and concepts.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
- A level of education, training and experience equivalent to either Law Degree from a recognized University or a Master’s Degree in business, health service administration, conflict analysis, or economics with seven (7) years of recent related experience at a senior level working within a complex public or private sector environment, and experience in contract negotiation.
- Healthcare background desirable.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to lead in the negotiation of complex contracts across the designated portfolio, and act as a senior advisor, coach, and mentor to contract management leaders.
- Understands the art of compromise and gaining mutual respect in negotiations. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintaining good working relationships with both internal and external partners on behalf of the department and organization.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate/mediate difficult conversations with the goal of mutual respect between the parties.
