We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented lawyer to join our growing team in the construction and real estate sector. Reporting directly to senior leadership, the successful candidate will provide legal advice and support on a wide range of matters related to land development, construction projects, property acquisitions and dispositions, leasing, and contract negotiation. This is an excellent opportunity for a bilingual (English & Mandarin) legal professional looking to make a direct impact in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including construction contracts, trade contracts, purchase and sale agreements, and commercial leases.
- Advise on matters relating to land development, including municipal approvals, zoning, site plan agreements, and condominium registrations.
- Provide legal support for acquisitions and dispositions of real property, including conducting due diligence and managing closing processes.
- Work closely with other departments and members of the company (e.g., project managers, accounting department, operations) to ensure legal risks are identified and mitigated.
- Solid understanding of litigation processes from early dispute resolutions to formal court proceedings and filings.
- Monitor changes in real estate and construction law and ensure company compliance with legal and regulatory obligations.
- Coordinate and manage external counsel as needed.
- Assist with corporate and regulatory filings, including minute book maintenance, corporate resolutions, and filings with the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services.
Qualifications:
- Education: Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized Canadian or international law school.
- Licensing: Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, or currently in the process of completing licensing requirements (e.g., articling or NCA candidate).
- Experience: 2–3 years of legal experience in real estate or construction law, either in private practice or an in-house setting.
- Languages: Fluency in English and Mandarin is required (both written and verbal).
- Strong understanding of Ontario construction law, municipal planning processes, and real estate transaction structures.
- Exceptional drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient at using Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Teraview, and the Ontario Business Registry.
