DNV’s Renewables and Power Grids group is seeking a Wind Turbine Engineer to join our Wind Finance and Technology team. In this role, you will evaluate risks associated with wind turbine technology, providing site suitability assessments, turbine technology reviews, and construction monitoring reports for wind farms to project owners, lenders, investors, banks, etc.
This role is based at our DNV offices in Montreal, QC; Toronto, ON; Calgary, AB, with a hybrid schedule typically involving three days per week working from an office or client site. Further details will be shared during the interview process.
What You’ll Do
- Perform turbine site suitability evaluations using DNV’s tools, reviewing mechanical load assessments prepared by OEMs.
- Contribute to wind turbine technology assessments, reviews, report writing, and client communication for technical due diligence related to project financing, mergers & acquisitions, and other business needs.
- Stay current on new wind turbine technologies, engaging with OEMs to understand the latest technical details and updates.
- Conduct field and factory inspections of turbines and components during construction, operation, manufacturing quality checks, and failure investigations.
- Review project O&M budgets and provide cost projections using DNV’s tools, including failure rate evaluations of major components.
- Prepare detailed reports, memos, technical notes, and correspondence to communicate clearly and accurately with clients.
- Review root cause analyses performed by OEMs or others, assessing completeness, risks, and mitigants, and participate in investigations as needed.
- Complete required documentation such as safety and risk assessments, timesheets, expense reports, inspection check sheets, and scheduling reports.
What is Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or physics.
- At least 1 year of experience in the wind energy industry, preferably in an engineering role; consulting experience is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of wind turbine systems including gearboxes, blades, pitch/yaw systems, generators, controllers, towers, electrical systems, and SCADA systems.
- Proficiency in MS Office and ability to learn new software.
- Willingness to travel up to 20% in North America; international travel is possible.
- Valid driver’s license and passport for international travel.
- Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Physical ability to perform job functions, including climbing turbines, working in various weather conditions, and entering confined spaces, with appropriate safety training provided.
- Pre-employment background check required.
What is Preferred
- Master’s degree in Wind Energy Engineering, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering.
- Experience with wind turbine inspections, construction monitoring, or quality assurance.
- Knowledge of mechanical systems, materials, controls, and environmental impacts on structures.
- Experience in wind farm energy assessments and site evaluation.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
- Familiarity with different turbine platforms and manufacturers.
- Knowledge of statistical failure rate analysis.
- Programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or similar.
- Understanding of consulting engineering business needs.
- Project management experience.
- Bilingual in French and/or Spanish is a plus.
