An established and well-respected pulp and paper manufacturing company in Canada is seeking a Director of Health and Safety to lead its health and safety operations. The position offers the opportunity to shape and strengthen the safety culture at a major industrial site through strategic leadership and hands-on engagement.
Our client is a major player in the Canadian pulp and paper industry with a track record in the operational history. The company recently became an independent entity under new ownership and is part of a broader international portfolio of industrial businesses. The mill operates as a fully integrated site and is embarking on a new phase of development with a strong focus on operational excellence, safety, and sustainability.
Description
The Health and Safety Director will be responsible for driving the continuous improvement of the health and safety management system across the entire site. This includes ensuring regulatory compliance under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and cultivating a culture of shared responsibility for safety among all employees.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and execute the mill-wide health and safety strategy in alignment with business and legal requirements.
- Maintain compliance with OHSA, WSIB, Ministry of Labour, and industry standards.
- Oversee and lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Drive proactive programs such as risk assessments, behavior-based safety, and near-miss reporting.
- Promote safety ownership through training, coaching, leadership visibility, and employee involvement.
- Track, analyze, and report safety performance indicators to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
- Collaborate with internal departments including operations, maintenance, HR, and environment to embed safety into all processes.
- Lead Emergency Response and Preparedness planning and training.
- Build and mentor a team of safety professionals and future leaders.
Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
- CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) designation or equivalent is preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in industrial health and safety, ideally in a heavy manufacturing environment.
- Experience managing health and safety at a large-scale site (300+ employees).
- Strong command of Ontario safety regulations and industry best practices.
- Skilled in continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proactive, adaptable, and capable of driving change in a dynamic environment.
Job Offer
- Base salary as from $160,000 CAD depending on the candidate’s experience.
- Annual performance bonus.
- Relocation assistance if required.
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage at 80%.
