Position Overview
As a senior leader at Invest Alberta Corporation (IAC), you will be responsible for delivering on the regional stakeholder strategy and shaping and strengthening Alberta’s investment narrative. This position reports to the Vice President, Government & External Affairs and provides strategic oversight of both the Stakeholder Relations and Research & Market Intelligence (RMI) teams, two critical areas that intersect in multiple ways, including the Request for Information (RFI) site selection process, investment opportunity development, sector-specific strategies, competitor jurisdiction benchmarking, policy advocacy, investor servicing, and stakeholder engagement.
This role is central to positioning Alberta as a top global destination for investment by anticipating market shifts, shaping regional strategies, and ensuring data-driven engagement with investors and stakeholders.
You will lead the implementation of IAC’s Regional Investment Initiative, ensuring that market intelligence insights are aligned with stakeholder feedback and that engagement efforts are backed by rigorous analysis that strengthens Alberta’s investment case. Through close collaboration with stakeholders across communities, government, and industry, you will translate intelligence into practical strategies that reflect both market trends and stakeholder perspectives. By integrating these functions, you will enhance IAC’s ability to respond to investor needs, influence policy, track outcomes, and tell Alberta’s compelling investment story to domestic and global audiences.
This role requires travel within Alberta and flexibility to work outside regular business hours, as needed.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Integration
- Drive the implementation of IAC’s regional strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and investor attraction goals.
- Integrate market intelligence with stakeholder engagement to deliver coordinated, high-impact regional initiatives.
- Oversee strategic planning for both RMI and stakeholder engagement functions, ensuring resources are directed toward strategic, high-value opportunities that advance Alberta’s competitiveness.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives where research insights and stakeholder relationships intersect, including sector-specific strategies, competitor benchmarking, and policy advocacy.
- Translate intelligence and stakeholder input into clear regional strategies that identify priority sectors, geographic opportunities, and long-term positioning for Alberta.
Research & Market Intelligence Oversight
- Lead the RMI team in gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data to inform strategy, business development, and marketing initiatives.
- Ensure insights are translated into actionable outcomes and compelling narratives for internal and external audiences.
- Monitor global economic trends, competitor jurisdictions, and policy developments to maintain Alberta’s competitive advantage.
- Support sector-specific investment strategies by identifying high-growth subsectors, emerging trends, and potential gaps in Alberta’s offerings.
- Move beyond responding to ad-hoc requests by proactively identifying strategic opportunities, emerging risks, and long-term trends that shape Alberta’s investment competitiveness.
- Develop forward-looking insights and scenario analyses to guide IAC’s regional strategies and stakeholder engagement priorities.
Stakeholder Relations Oversight
- Guide the Stakeholder Relations team in building and maintaining relationships with communities, economic development organizations, community organizations, government, and industry.
- Ensure engagement activities are evidence-based and tied directly to investor needs, policy opportunities, and sector priorities, maximizing their impact on investment attraction.
- Use market intelligence to strengthen Alberta’s value proposition in stakeholder conversations, investor pitches, and community presentations.
- Leverage stakeholder insights to validate and refine RMI findings, ensuring strategies reflect both market evidence and partner perspectives.
- Build a culture of evidence-based engagement by ensuring stakeholder conversations, community outreach, and investment pitches are grounded in robust research and market intelligence.
Request for Information Process
- Oversee and coordinate the RFI process, working closely with both the RMI and Stakeholder Relations teams.
- Engage with investors and site selectors to define investment criteria and evaluate community proposals.
- Ensure proposals are collected, assessed, and presented to investors in a timely and professional manner.
- Analyze RFI data over time to identify trends, refine investment strategies, and continuously strengthen the quality of regional pitches and business cases presented to investors.
Organizational Integration & Investor Servicing
- Promote collaboration between data, research, and engagement functions to provide seamless stakeholder and investor support.
- Oversee joint efforts in investor servicing and aftercare, ensuring ongoing relationships are informed by real-time intelligence and performance tracking.
- Serve as a central liaison for regional partners, aligning internal teams and external stakeholders toward shared goals.
- Develop performance metrics and reporting systems to track outcomes and demonstrate how intelligence and engagement efforts directly contribute to securing investment.
- Establish feedback loops to measure how research insights and stakeholder engagement translate into actual investment wins, policy changes, or strengthened regional competitiveness.
Thought Leadership & Storytelling
- Champion Alberta’s investment narrative by integrating data and stakeholder insights into evidence-based communications that highlight Alberta’s strengths and competitive advantages.
- Support the development of reports, presentations, and public speaking engagements that position IAC as a thought leader.
- Work with Communications and other internal teams to ensure consistent, evidence-based messaging in all outreach.
- Ensure insights and narratives influence not only external audiences but also shape internal decision-making, business development priorities, and policy advocacy efforts.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, political science, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- 10–12 years of progressive leadership experience in research strategy, research development, economic analysis, stakeholder relations, and business operations.
- Proven track record of building and leading high-performing teams, with a focus on accountability, collaboration, and performance excellence.
- Demonstrated ability to act decisively, with a high degree of independence, initiative, and judgment.
- Strong influencing and relationship-building skills across a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Exceptional strategic leadership style with the ability to formulate and interpret policies, provide expert advice at all organizational levels, and lead change.
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate market shifts, identify emerging opportunities, and translate insights into actionable strategies.
- Deep understanding of Alberta’s economy, investment landscape, and policy environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to translate complex data into compelling narratives.
- Experience with budget preparation and financial management is an asset, supporting effective resource allocation and accountability.
- Superior organizational and administrative abilities, with proven capacity to manage multiple priorities under tight timelines.
