Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)
We are looking for an Intermediate Electrical Hardware Designer to join our Hardware team in Toronto!
The successful candidate will produce application designs and equipment designs that meet requirements utilizing processes based on established engineering principles.
Key Accountabilities:
- Technical Skills:
- Interpreting, identifying, and documentation of requirements such that customer needs are met within the budget and schedule constraints
- Ability to assemble components into enclosures to optimize room footprints
- Contributing to the development of new designs
- Implementing designs using good design practice and applicable AREMA and CENELEC standards and guidelines
- Devising and running tests to verify functionality and identifying and solving problems
- Preparing material specifications for hardware and/or software components
- Participating in selection of components that optimize MTBF of assemblies
- Creation of project documentation and interface with Consortium members, technical customer staff, and various other stakeholders
- Ensures both the safety and quality of hardware products while reducing deployment costs
- Contribute to heightened reuse of product hardware and improvements in hardware quality
- Demonstrates logical reasoning resulting in effective hardware application designs, products, and processes
- Understands IS/MS SelTrac Radio equipment
- Management Skills:
- Manage assigned tasks within schedule and budget
- Keep track of progress on all tasks assigned
- Verify that all assigned work has been completed accurately and on time
- With guidance and supervision as required, carry out all assigned work efficiently
- Support the development of accurate, supportable estimates for current departmental technology and provide estimates for technologies that are new to the department
- Aptitude:
- Locating and researching source documentation for design activities
- Making timely decisions, both independently and in concert with others
- Identifying problems or inefficiencies in the department’s operation and suggesting improvements
Key Requirements:
- 3+ years related work experience in the rail industry specifically in hardware signaling design
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent engineering degree
- Computer literate with knowledge of CAD tools (MicroStation, AutoCAD), Bills of Materials (SAP), Configuration Management, and Microsoft Office suite
- Proficient with the use of development tools and CAD packages (Microstation, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical)
- Well-developed verbal skills in English to interact effectively and professionally in a variety of forums
- Well-developed writing skills in English to prepare clear, effective documents
- Good interpersonal and diplomatic skills to deal confidently, courteously, and correctly with people at any level within the organization and the customer
- Good technical writing skills
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the job and in relations with others
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent engineering degree
- Power distribution design knowledge for rail deployment
- Prior knowledge of a configuration management system
