Are you a seasoned professional with a passion for substation engineering and equipment specification? At Juno Engineering Canada, we empower our team to drive sustainable progress across transmission, distribution, and industrial power infrastructure. With over 40 years of engineering excellence, we foster a collaborative, forward-thinking culture where your expertise in substation yard design and utility interconnections will shape the future of energy.
Position Overview
We are seeking a full-time, permanent Senior Electrical Substation Engineer with 10+ years of experience in high-voltage substation design and Canadian utility projects. This role is ideal for an individual who has led substation projects—from 25 kV distribution to 230 kV transmission—and who is eager to bring technical depth and leadership to our dynamic team.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Execution:
- Independently manage and execute HV substation engineering projects, ensuring timely delivery and technical excellence.
- Develop and deliver comprehensive substation design packages, including equipment specifications, drawings, calculations, and bills of materials.
- Oversee yard general arrangements, grounding & lightning protection layouts, cable bus/tray routes, and structural concepts for substation equipment.
- Analyze design alternatives at FEED and detailed design stages to recommend robust, cost-efficient solutions.
- Coordinate with civil and structural teams for foundations, spill containment, grading, and drainage.
- Supervise junior engineers and designers to ensure high-quality deliverables.
Design & Analysis:
- Prepare and review specifications and datasheets for transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, CVTs, CTs/PTs, surge arresters, grounding systems, station service, and auxiliary AC/DC systems.
- Develop protection and control philosophies, relay selection tables, and metering requirements.
- Conduct advanced studies including short-circuit, arc flash, protection coordination, grounding analysis, insulation coordination, and inrush/flicker modelling.
Client, Vendor & Utility Engagement:
- Interface with Canadian utilities (Hydro-Québec, Manitoba Hydro, AESO, SaskPower, BC Hydro) and industrial clients to define interconnection scopes and ensure compliance.
- Manage RFQs, vendor Q&A, and technical bid evaluations for long-lead equipment.
- Participate in design reviews, FATs, and site inspections.
Project Management:
- Coordinate capital projects including Class-3 estimates, schedules, and AFE documentation.
- Collaborate closely with stakeholders and field personnel to support construction and commissioning.
Success Attributes
Your success in this role will depend on your ability to:
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to utilities, clients, and vendors.
- Exhibit strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Balance cost, schedule, and constructability in high-voltage designs.
- Mentor and lead teams while fostering a collaborative culture.
- Adapt to varying project demands and perform effectively under pressure.
- Leverage a diverse range of technical and industry knowledge in your decision-making process.
Requirements
Education & Credentials
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (advanced degrees an asset).
- Professional Engineering Licence (P.Eng.) in Canada.
Experience:
- 10+ years of substation engineering, with at least 5 years in equipment specification and yard design.
Technical Competence:
- Proven experience designing 25 kV–230 kV substations, including yard layouts and auxiliary systems.
- Expertise in equipment specification and procurement for HV transformers, breakers, surge arresters, CT/PT sets, CVTs, and grounding systems.
- Strong understanding of Canadian substation practices (yard grading, spill containment, bus & steel structures, E-houses).
- Experience with grounding grid design, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc-flash, insulation coordination, and load-flow studies.
- Familiarity with transient recovery voltage (TRV) considerations
- In-depth knowledge of CSA C22.3, IEEE, IEC, ANSI, and utility interconnection requirements.
Location & Travel
- Based in Calgary, Alberta, with flexible work arrangements available.
- Occasional travel across Canada for utility meetings, vendor FATs, and substation site work.
