Initiatives for Just Communities (IJC) walks with people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and intellectual disabilities, and those currently or previously incarcerated, to help them to achieve a better quality of life for themselves and their communities.

IJC runs four restorative justice programs: El’dad, Touchstone, Circles of Support & Accountability, and Open Circle.

  • El’dad provides residential support, day programming, Drop-In programming, Supported Independent Living, Home Shares, and Alternative Justice programming for adults with intellectual disabilities in the Eastman Region.
  • Touchstone provides Outreach, Drop-In programming, and Support Independent Living for adults with FASD and/or intellectual disabilities in Winnipeg
  • Circles of Support & Accountability (CoSA) supports the healthy reintegration of adults with high-risk offense cycles as they are released from prison and integrate into the community.
  • Open Circle is a prison visitation program that matches trained volunteers with inmates, most of whom are serving their sentences at Stony Mountain Institution.

The duties of the Board Treasurer at Initiatives for Just Communities are as follows:

  • To be a member of the Executive Committee alongside the Board Chair and Vice-Chair
  • On behalf of the Board of Directors, to ensure that the financial affairs of the organization are being attended to
  • To oversee the annual budgeting process
  • To chair the Finance Committee
    • To call meeting of the Finance Committee at least twice per year
    • To ensure that the Finance Committee is fulfilling its duties diligently, in good faith and in a timely manner
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Board Chair or Board of Directors.

IJC’s Board of Directors meet every other month (September, November, January, March, and May), and for an Annual General Meeting in June. Meetings last approximately two hours and take place on weekday evenings. Meetings alternate between Winnipeg and the Steinbach area. The Treasurer is also responsible for attending meetings of the Executive Committee and Finance Committee as needed. The Treasurer also commits to attending one day-long Board Retreat with all Directors each year.

Appointments to the Board are for a three-year term.

Board meetings are held in Winnipeg, and occasionally in Mitchell, Manitoba. IJC reimburses Board members for mileage outside of the city.
