As innovators in child health, we lead and partner to improve the health of children through the integration of healthcare, leading-edge research and education. Our reputation would not have been built – nor could it be maintained – without the skills, knowledge and experience of the extraordinary people who come to work here every day. SickKids is committed to ongoing learning and development, and features a caring and supportive work environment that combines exceptionally high standards of practice.
When you join SickKids, you become part of our community. We share a commitment and determination to fulfill our vision of Healthier Children. A Better World .
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to work alongside the world’s best in paediatric healthcare.
We are looking for a highly motivated Data Analyst to join our team at the Child Health Evaluative Sciences (CHES) program in the Research Institute at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. Under the supervision of Drs. Peter Gill and Sanjay Mahant (Scientists, SickKids RI and Departments of Paediatrics), the Data Analyst will become a core member of an outcomes-based research group that aims to generate evidence focused on the care of hospitalized children. In particular, the successful candidate would work with the newly developed GEMINI-Paediatrics data platform using routinely generated clinical and administrative data from hospital information systems.
GEMINI ( is a unique big data platform in Canada using advanced methods and analytics to extract and standardize data captured in hospital electronic health records. GEMINI currently exists at 30+ Ontario hospitals and supports the Ontario General Medicine Quality Improvement Network, GeMQIN, a provincial network led by Ontario Health to improve care for general medicine hospital patients. GEMINI is a collaborative data and analytics platform for all Ontario hospitals to accelerate research and quality improvement, leading to excellent hospital care. GEMINI has recently expanded to develop GEMINI-Paediatrics, Co-Led by Drs. Mahant and Gill, which will include all paediatric inpatient visits across 30+ Ontario hospitals, including all specialty children’s hospitals.
The main roles of a Data Analyst are to design scientifically rigorous approaches to examining data, apply advanced analytical techniques to healthcare data, and translate the findings into meaningful, applied knowledge for researchers and other collaborators. This includes conceptualizing algorithms and study designs, creating statistical analysis plans, conducting and interpreting analyses, and reporting findings in an applied manner. Each Data Scientist at GEMINI has an area of specialization, such as machine learning, simulation modeling, biostatistics and epidemiology.
This is a full-time role (1.0 FTE, 35 hours/week) beginning with a one-year contract. The candidate will work within a dynamic team of paediatric clinician-researchers, data analysts and scientists, clinicians and quality improvement specialists focused on the care of hospitalized children. They will work with the Canadian Paediatric Inpatient Research Network (PIRN – a national network focused on generating evidence for hospitalized children in general paediatric settings. Data analyses, statistical modeling and machine learning

  • Carry out data analyses using statistical models and/or machine learning tasks that involve supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and/or reinforcement learning
  • Apply common statistical modelling and machine learning algorithms to answer project objectives using libraries from R/Python, E.g. linear/logistic regression, survival analysis, risk adjustment, PCA, Markov Chain, k-means, GLM, GAM, GEE, SVM, random forest, neural networks, and common time series models
  • Understand specific interpretations of different statistical models, and apply the correct model to correspond to the desired research-related interpretation.
  • Analyze/interpret results of projects and draw conclusions for review and incorporation into reports, manuscripts, abstracts, grants, and presentations for different audiences.
  • Apply advanced algorithms to perform predictive analytics and develop risk scores and other derived variables
  • Apply models to unstructured text data, such as bag of words, LDA topic modeling, and word embeddings
  • Compare and contrast results from different models using appropriate model performance summaries (e.g. RMSE, MAE, F1, AUC, operating characteristics, calibration, etc.)
  • Prepare elegant visualizations and dashboards to communicate findings/output including graphs, tables and figures.
  • Clearly document all model details, code and iterations using appropriate commenting and version control, such as Git

Data exploration, preparation and visualization

  • Ensure adequate quality control by setting standards, monitor results and institute appropriate steps for data cleaning, consistency checks and other data quality control measures prior to analysis
  • Maintain data documentation, physical and logical storage of scripts, records and master archive lists
  • Perform descriptive and inferential analysis in R and/or Python. Write HTML/PDF/Microsoft Word reports summarizing the analysis
  • Validate output tables, listings or figures generated to ensure accuracy and reliability of analyses.
  • Pre-process raw data to prepare for analysis. This includes data cleaning, transformation, and integration from multiple sources, as well as understanding overall data quality
  • Design and develop dashboard and reports with interactive visualizations using libraries such as Highcharts, Plotly, etc.
  • Produce high quality ad hoc and standardized reports, customized per project using R/Python procedures, tailored to different end users (e.g. clinicians, senior management and hospital executives)
  • Develop efficient programs, algorithms or systems to reduce programing time of standardized data analyses and reports
  • Contribute to Agile sprints for the development of internal GEMINI r packages.

Inter-institutional partnership development

  • Establish, strengthen, and maintain partnership between research teams leading GEMINI-Paediatrics at SickKids and Unity Health Toronto.
  • Facilitate clear and consistent communication across teams through regular engagement, including but not limited to team meetings, updates (e.g., via Slack and Teams), and research roundtable.
  • Integrate with the other Data Scientists at GEMINI to develop multi-disciplinary analytic approaches suited to answer project objectives, and assist in best practices and process development
  • Work closely with researchers within both research teams to establish coding techniques, structure of dataset for studies and develop sound analytical plans
  • Documenting and communicating errors in data/code to senior staff

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • MSc of PhD degree in mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, computer science, or a related degree with at least 1 year of professional data science experience OR demonstrable equivalent combination of at least 2 years of work experience and specialized training
  • Expert level programming with SQL, R, and/or Python
  • Must be able to read in and merge data from disparate sources, perform data quality checks, manage missing data and prepare data for statistical models/machine learning models under minimal supervision.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in inferential statistic, and statistical analysis methods using large administrative and clinical datasets
  • Experience in maintaining and developing inter-institutional collaborations and partnerships is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in and/or work experience related to pediatric health research would be an asset.
  • A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion objectives.
