My client, a well-established Canadian insurer is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Commercial Property Underwriting to lead its corporate underwriting function. Based in Toronto, this high-visibility leadership role is central to setting national underwriting direction and supporting technical excellence across the commercial property portfolio.

This is more than a technical role—it’s a strategic position for a proven leader who can drive portfolio performance, elevate underwriting practices, and influence organizational direction in a collaborative, fast-moving environment.

What You’ll Be Responsible For:

  • Leading the creation and refinement of commercial property underwriting guidelines and wordings
  • Serving as a senior referral and technical authority for complex and high-value risks
  • Driving consistency and discipline across underwriting operations nationally
  • Collaborating cross-functionally with actuarial, claims, risk services, and executive leadership
  • Coaching and developing a team of high-performing underwriters
  • Identifying emerging trends, risks, and opportunities to support profitable growth
  • Championing innovation, process improvement, and best practices across the portfolio

What You Bring to the Table:

  • 10+ years of commercial property underwriting experience
  • Minimum 3 years of leadership experience managing underwriters or technical teams
  • Strong business acumen and ability to link underwriting discipline to financial performance
  • In-depth knowledge of the Canadian P&C insurance landscape
  • Track record of influencing underwriting strategy at a national or regional level
  • Exceptional communication skills and a collaborative, people-first leadership style
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
