The Medical Science Liaison is responsible for managing and executing field medical activities that support the Medical Affairs strategies for all of our marketed product and/or development compounds. They use clinical knowledge and field expertise along with business orientation to identify and communicate scientific trends in the healthcare environment. They engage in peer coaching across the Field team and are sought out by peers and colleagues to inform the medical strategy with identified market and healthcare trends. The Medical Science Liaison will understand the external healthcare environment and data gaps related to the disease area or product; gather field intelligence, identify and communicate key insights to internal colleagues; and fulfill stakeholder information needs by communicating appropriate details of therapeutic area and product/compound. The ideal candidate will possess an understanding of rare diseases development and a strong sense of science and business acumen.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop strong peer-to-peer relationships (field-based and virtual) with external experts/KOLs in the area of TTR amyloidosis (cardiology, neurology, etc), as well as identifying and engaging new and upcoming experts
  • Serve as the scientific resource/expert for Canadian HCPs in given therapeutic areas, providing in-depth scientific information across disease states and products in response to requests.
  • Support and execute field medical plans in assigned regions aligned with overarching strategic brand & tactical plans (MAC plans). These include appropriate discussions and activities including:
  • Reactive discussions on investigator-initiated study (IIS) opportunities and will act as the primary conduit with the investigator during the IIS process.
  • Disease state discussions and latest clinical trends
  • In a project-based set up assist in the development of regional and national advisory boards, medical education, congress symposia and publication planning
  • Support the Country Medical director, medical manager, and/or MSL colleagues in the review of promotional materials (MRCP)
  • Be the team expert on all aspects of the MSL role including: process improvements and sharing of best practice
  • Foster a collaborative working relationship with Medical and Commercial colleagues to ensure strategies and plans are both patient-focused and cross-functional
  • Work with the Canadian and regional team to bring the voice of the field-based MSL into strategic development
  • Provide accurate and fair-balanced medical and scientific education using literature, summaries of publications, and presentations to external and internal customers in a non-promotional and appropriate manner.
  • Provide scientific support and attendance to conferences and meetings
  • Ensure relevant and appropriate responses to customer medical inquiries
  • Maintain high level of expertise in the evolving scientific / therapeutic area and in competitor medicines
  • MSL is held to the highest ethical standards, and accountable to be compliant with all guidelines, regulations, and internal policies within Canada and Alnylam.

Qualifications

  • High level of Scientific and healthcare background. Advanced degree in medical/natural science, pharmacology or bio-medical sciences.
  • Experience within the health care industry, especially as an MSL preferred.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize own work schedule
  • Ability to learn and gain expertise across several therapeutic/scientific areas simultaneously.
  • Approximately 50-60% travel is required; overnight travel is required as needed
  • Well developed social- and relationship building ability
  • High level of planning and organisational skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet departmental and organisational needs.
  • Experience of presenting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience of working in a customer focused environment.
  • Awareness of commercial processes at local country level.
  • High level of self-motivation with the ability to work independently and as part of an integrated matrix organisation.
  • Strong critical and independent thinking with effective team working skills.
  • Business acumen with a good understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare arena
