Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services and working in close partnership with the Chief and Medical Director of Oncology, the Program Director of Oncology oversees approximately 600+ professionals across multiple THP sites, with a total annual budget of approximately $55M.This includes the Carlo Fidani Regional Cancer Centre, the hub of specialized cancer services in the Region. In this operational and strategic role, the Director will be responsible for developing and advancing the program’s vision, goals and objectives in alignment with the hospital’s mission, vision, and strategic direction, and Ontario Health Cancer Care Ontario’s Cancer Plan 6. The Director will partner with the Mississauga Halton Central West Regional Cancer Program to build strategic pathways and partnerships to ensure the support and ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and patient-centred care by actively promoting and continuing to advance best practices and high-quality, specialized services, both within and outside of the hospital.
The Director will play a key role as an influential expert in clinical operations and strategic program development, liaising with the clinical leaders across the organization to enable consistent, high standards of evidence-based care to the client/patient population in oncology. In addition to daily operations and program oversight, the Director will ensure the delivery of quality improvement and strategic initiatives designed to yield high quality care for patients and their families. Additionally, the Director will build on previous/current successes of the Program, empowering and supporting the professional development of the staff and clinical leaders, setting patient-centric goals and giving them clarity of purpose as the Program continues to advance, and exceed standards of care and evidence-based practice.

With an unyielding passion to drive clinical and operational excellence, the director builds and nurtures a culture of patient safety, outstanding patient experience, while achieving high performance in the domains of quality, access, and sustainability.Program improvement deliverables will include focus on various quality of care initiatives such as optimizing patient length of stay, reducing ALC days, reducing average time to in-patient bed from the Emergency Department, and prevention of injurious falls and hospital acquired pressure injuries. Leveraging innovative pathway development involving the streamlining of processes, fostering collaboration, and leveraging technology to enhance various aspects of cancer care, along the continuum from diagnosis to survivorship will be critical. Effectively and efficiently organize the operational infrastructure, activities and personnel within the Clinical Trials Department to support the Cancer Program’s clinical research agenda and ensuring adequate facilities and qualified personnel are available to support a research model that services both academic and industry sponsored studies across all disease sites within the Cancer Program.

Key Responsibilities
- Identify, develop and implement key strategic program initiatives that can maximize quality, advance innovation and transformative care, and adopt best practices across the continuum of the patient’s journey.
- Work collaboratively with Program Leadership and teams to translate our THP strategy within the Cancer program.
- Advance partnerships with various partners and stakeholders, striving towards seamless integrated care, program excellence and system innovation.
- Strengthen collaboration and connectivity across teams, clinical programs and with partner hospitals.
- Strategically advance and lead education, research and innovation across the Cancer Program.
- Drive continuous improvements in quality of care, patient experience, and clinical and operational excellence.
- Lead a high-performing team while fostering collaborative engagement, leadership development, and human resource planning.
- Provide regional and provincial leadership to guide ongoing system-level initiatives exploring partnerships and program efficiencies.
Leadership, Operations Management and Quality Improvement
- Provide direction to the Program leaders on the design and development of quality and process improvement programs tailored to the Program’s needs based on corporate priorities and provincial benchmarks and targets.
- Support the process of quality-of-care reviews related to adverse patient outcomes and lead the management team in the development and implementation of recommendations to prevent future events.
- Conduct regular quality and safety leadership, walk-arounds and huddles. Further, ensure that the Program is reviewed and evaluated on a regular basis.
- Assume a leadership role in the development and maintenance of effective communication and working relationships with all departmental and Hospital staff and ensure a healthy, respectful workplace and positive public relations.
- Establish role expectations and job descriptions for staff and monitor the quality of working life within the Program.
- Ensure the provision of the highest quality of patient care through a multidimensional process of continuous quality improvement, implement ongoing reviews and simplification of systems and ensure the development and maintenance of patient/family centered care models.
- Create an environment that maximizes the potential of all team members by supporting point of care and evidence-based decision making and lead the implementation of quality-based procedures and evidence-based best practices. Further, create an environment that inspires creativity and innovation in the delivery of patient and family care related services.
Strategic Planning, Development and Partnerships
- Lead the strategic development of short and long-term goals and objectives which are consistent with the corporate strategic plan and Ontario Cancer Plan 6.
- Implement strategic program plans; develop business cases; evaluate current initiatives.
- Through collaboration with teams, identify meaningful and measurable performance indicators to support continuous quality improvement and program planning. Monitor and improve key performance indicators and develop associated strategic priorities and improvement plans. Further, with the Senior Leadership Team, define the strategic priorities in accordance with THP’s strategic plan and maintain Program-level strategic plans for the Program.
- Liaise with other Hospital Directors and Managers to ensure that the support needs for the Program are met effectively and efficiently. Collaboratively develop strategies to address service needs and establish and maintain means of interdisciplinary collaborative decision making between programs and within the Program.
- Represent the Hospital to other service providers, planning groups, and Ontario Health Cancer Care Ontario, and ensure a strong linkage with community agencies and other groups to facilitate a seamless continuum of patient care between the Hospital and the community.
- Work with provincial, regional and local programs including the Mississauga Halton Central West Regional Cancer Program to plan, implement and evaluate outcomes of work processes for areas of responsibility and direct reports.
- Plan, develop, and ensure the delivery of strategic regional and specialized programs to provide patient- and family-centered care in collaboration with internal, community and tertiary partners.
- Maintain and establish close partnerships with the Ministry of Health, Ontario Health, and other organizations to develop strategies to improve care delivery of oncology patients.
