Role Required
Psychiatrist Member positions on the Mental Health Review Panel Roster available in 2025 across all three panels.
Location
The psychiatrist members may travel for hearings throughout the province.
About the Agency
The Roster is established under the Mental Health Act (Act) and plays an important role in protecting the rights of patients in facilities and individuals subject to community treatment orders.
The Roster is an adjudicative body that considers applications pertaining to:
- cancellation of admission and renewal certificates for patients detained in designated facilities;
- return of a patient to a correctional facility;
- cancellation of community treatment orders;
- requests for an order for a hospital to issue a community treatment order in respect of a formal patient.
- patient competence to make treatment decisions; and
- administration of treatment to patients who object to it under the Act .
The Roster has three chairs and three vice-chairs appointed. In addition to the chairs and vice-chairs, the Roster includes psychiatrist and public members. Each hearing panel has three members: one chair/vice- chair, one psychiatrist member and one public member. The Roster maintains a large number of members to schedule hearings.
Role Description

This unique position provides a multi-faceted insight into Alberta’s mental health care system as well as continued professional development.
The Roster receives applications and conducts hearings regarding formal patients and individuals subject to community treatment orders across the province.
- Psychiatrist members will take part in hearings, meetings and business of the Roster.
- Members also participate in meetings, both scheduled and ad hoc as deemed appropriate by the chair, to conduct the business of the Roster.
- Members may be required to review application package prior to the hearing.
- Flexibility in scheduling and ability and willingness to travel is required.
- Willingness to drive a personal/rented vehicle and/or carpool with other panel members to be fiscally responsible may be considered an asset.
- Competency with video conferencing is an asset.
Skills and Experience Required
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following competencies and skills:
- Expertise and experience in board governance in the private, public and/or volunteer/non-profit sector.
- Prior experience with administrative proceedings, hearing or adjudication processes and group decision-making experience.
- Ability to consistently apply impartiality, objectiveness and sound judgment in managing challenging and sensitive issues.
- Proven analytical and problem solving skills with a strong reputation for fairness and principled decision-making.
- Ability to analyze and synthesize complex information from several sources and varying points of view.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills and be able to listen and review information from multiple sources.
- Build and maintain relationship with third parties, stakeholders and communities in mental health.
- Capable of managing workload in order to meet deadlines.
- Experience with telehealth and other videoconferencing services.
Remuneration and Time Commitment
Members are appointed by the Minister of Mental Health and Addiction and may be eligible for reappointment to serve a total of 12 consecutive years.
This is not a salaried position. Psychiatrist members receive remuneration in accordance with the Mental Health Review Panel Regulation:
- $790 for up to and including 4 hours in any day on which a hearing is conducted; and
- $197 for each additional hour, on a prorated basis, spent on business of the review panel other than travel time; and
- $98.50 for each additional hour, on a prorated basis, spent on travel time.
This is a part-time role. Time commitment is approximately twelve hours a month.
