What Will You Do?
We are seeking a Reliability Engineer to join the Lumentum team in Ottawa. The Reliability Engineer is a crucial member of the product development team responsible for ensuring Lumentum’s photonic telecommunication and data center products exceed industry and customer requirements for reliability and durability. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to products deployed in virtually every telecommunication system worldwide.
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Ensure product reliability and durability exceed market requirements, industry standards, and customer expectations throughout the product lifecycle.
- Develop and define qualification and reliability requirements. Select appropriate test methods, measurement parameters, and acceptance criteria using sound engineering judgment to replicate field conditions and target lifetimes.
- Lead the planning, scheduling, and execution of qualification and reliability tests on raw materials, sub-components, and finished goods. Ensure timely, cost-effective completion of tests.
- Analyze reliability test data, apply statistics to interpret results, and prepare detailed reports. Investigate failures and anomalies to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions and product improvements.
- Conduct reliability assessments and testing to evaluate the impact of design, material, and process changes.
- Track and report field reliability metrics for deployed products. Compare real-world performance with predicted models to validate design assumptions.
- Perform failure rate (FIT) calculations, availability analyses, and reliability risk assessments. Use physics-of-failure principles, acceleration models, and experimental methods to characterize product reliability.
- Coordinate and perform third-party testing (e.g., NEBs, EMI / EMC, Electrical Safety, and LASER Safety). This may require limited travel to set up and operate equipment.
Requirements
- Five or more years of experience in optical communications, electronics, semi-conductor, or related industry in roles such as product reliability, qualification, failure analysis, design engineering, process engineering, or compliance.
- Familiarity with optical and electrical measurements and measurement equipment.
- Experience in failure analysis and root cause analysis.
- Ability to scrutinize and interpret technical literature, reports, and data. Identify flaws and provide meaningful recommendations.
- Knowledge of statistics.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to operate effectively in a highly technical and multi-project environment.
- Graduation from a BSc. or MSc. program in electrical engineering, optical engineering, physics, or related fields. An advanced degree is preferred.
Advantageous for the position
- Knowledge of electronic and optical manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of electrical and optical components (e.g., ICs, FPGAs, Interconnects, LASERs, Optical Detectors, Switches, WSS, MEMs, LCOS).
- Knowledge of material analysis techniques.
- Knowledge of IEC, JEDEC, and Telcordia Qualification Standards.
- ASQ Certified Reliability Engineer, Six Sigma certification.
- Knowledge of Weibull++, BlockSim, Jump software.
