Salary Range: SP5, Level 7, $143,040- $178,800 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
Senior Pipeline Engineer-Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for a Senior Pipeline Engineer to join its talented team of professionals in the Regulatory Applications Branch. As the Senior Pipeline Engineer you will act as the subject matter expert on pipeline integrity, nonroutine and operational applications, and root cause analysis of pipeline incidents. This role reviews applications and uses delegated authority to issue Pipeline Operational approvals and participates in related compliance assurance activities. The role requires in-depth understanding and expertise in AER Directives 056, 077, Pipeline Act, Pipeline Rules, and CSA Z662 Oil and Gas Pipelines Standards.
Utilizing strong interpersonal and communication skills, the Senior Pipeline Engineer will facilitate interactions and cooperation with both internal and external stakeholders which include AER groups, industry licensees, industry associations, government agencies, regulators from other jurisdictions, other technical disciplines and the public.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Review all aspects (unique design, unique pipeline materials, deviation from current technical requirements, engineering assessments) of referred Directive 056 applications.
- Evaluate requests for Pipeline Operational Authorizations; review and approve new technology, pipeline design, and materials.
- Establish processes for verification of compliance with technical approvals and conduct such verifications.
- Evaluate all elements of highly technical and complex pipeline applications that are going through the Statement of Concern Application Review (SOCAR) process, proceeding to hearing, attend hearings to provide technical advice, and/or participate in Alternative Dispute Resolution sessions as decision maker and subject matter expert.
- Provide technical expertise and direction to internal and external stakeholders regarding complex pipeline technical issues, including across all divisions of the AER.
- Participate in the development and implementation of regulations and standards such as CSA Z662 Oil and Gas Pipeline Standards including CSA subcommittees, revisions to the Pipeline Act and Pipeline Rules and any other associated AER directives.
- Lead and/or participate in enterprise projects and assignments by providing technical guidance and input, collaborating with internal/external stakeholders, and assisting with implementation into core business, as necessary.
