The person in this position will work on multidisciplinary project teams providing structural engineering and related technical expertise primarily for dam structures, hydropower facilities, and flood control structures, such as spillways, decant systems, overflow weirs, culverts, pump/lift stations, and other hydraulic structures. Responsibilities include design and analysis, preparing plans and specifications, report writing, cost estimating, site inspections, dam safety evaluations, risk analyses, minor construction observation, and project management. The role may require short-term, out-of-town assignments. Opportunities may also include working on renewable projects like wind turbine foundation design, mining, and industrial processing facilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in structural or civil engineering with a structural emphasis (including structural analysis and steel and concrete design)
- 10 years of related work experience
- Professional Engineer (P. Eng) certification and PE license or the ability to obtain within one year
- Experience with AutoCAD or Revit and structural analysis software such as RISA 3D, STAAD Pro, or MathCAD
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with team members and clients
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness
- Interest in leading and mentoring early-career engineers
- Willingness to travel and adjust personal schedule as needed
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
- Legal authorization to work in Canada without sponsorship
- Knowledge of Canadian Dam Association (CDA) dam safety guidelines and bulletins
- Ability to travel to and work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 15+ years of related work experience
- Master’s degree in civil or structural engineering
- Experience in the consulting industry
- Experience performing dam safety reviews, audits, inspections, and structural stability analyses for hydraulic structures
- Familiarity with hydrotechnical, mechanical, and electrical aspects of hydropower operations
- Familiarity with hydraulic design of dam appurtenant structures
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered, involving split time between a Barr office and a home office. The position is based in Barr’s Calgary or Saskatoon offices.
Note: Some work locations may feature rough terrain and conditions typical of construction sites, including limited accessibility and moving machinery. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in drug screening at client request.
