WSP is currently hiring Traction Power Engineers at all levels—Junior, Intermediate, and Senior—to support the planning, design, and delivery of traction power systems for major rail and transit infrastructure projects across Canada. What you can expect to do here:

Core Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to the design and analysis of traction power systems, including substations, single-line diagrams, layout plans, and equipment specifications.
  • Perform or support power system modeling and simulation to assess performance, efficiency, reliability, and safety.
  • Assist in—or lead, depending on experience—the development of grounding and bonding designs in accordance with CSA, IEEE, and local safety standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including signaling, telecom, overhead catenary, rolling stock, and civil works—to ensure integrated and coordinated system designs.
  • Prepare, review, and validate engineering drawings, technical calculations, specifications, and compliance documentation.
  • Participate in technical reviews, risk assessments, and constructability evaluations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders by providing technical input, progress updates, and support during design and implementation phases.
  • Depending on experience level, take on increasing responsibility for task coordination, technical leadership, and mentoring of junior staff.

Must-have Skills forboth senior and intermediate-level roles:

  • Proven experience with system integration across multiple rail disciplines (e.g., traction power, signaling, communications).
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian and international transit standards and regulatory frameworks (e.g., CSA, IEEE, AREMA, NFPA 130).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability lead complex projects and mentor cross-functional teams

What you’ll bring to WSP:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education : Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. A master’s degree is considered an asset.
  • Licensure : Licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario or eligible for licensure.
  • Communication : Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports, specifications, and client-facing documentation.
  • Experience Expectations by Level :
    • Junior Level : New graduate to 5 years related experience and strong academic foundation.
    • Intermediate Level : 5-12 years related experience within rail or transit projects.
    • Senior Level : 10+ years of related experience within rail or transit projects, with demonstrated leadership in project delivery, client engagement, and mentoring.

Technical Skills:

  • Solid academic foundation in power systems, electrical circuits, and control systems.
  • Strong knowledge of AC/DC traction systems , substation design , protection coordination , and equipment ratings .
  • Familiarity with CAD platforms such asAutoCAD,Civil 3D, orRevitfor electrical design documentation.
  • Familiarity with EMC/EMI concepts, mitigation strategies and mutual impacts on traction power and adjacent systems.
  • Identify and mitigate issues related to DC stray current corrosion and Monitoring Systems.
  • General understanding of railway systems such as signaling, telecommunications, SCADA, and control systems.
  • Experience with system integration across multiple rail disciplines.
  • Exposure to Canadian and international transit standards and regulatory frameworks.
