As a VP of Finance, you will be a highly experienced tactical and strategic finance professional. The role will start with only one direct report (Senior Accountant), allowing you to learn and assess the needs of the function. It’s an opportunity best suited to a well-rounded SaaS finance leader with a disciplined approach who has helped build and witnessed the success of a finance operation in scaling tech companies. You will oversee all financial aspects of our company, from financial planning and analysis to risk management and regulatory compliance. You will report to the CEO and work closely with the Executive Team and other key stakeholders to drive financial growth, optimize profitability, and implement best practices to support our business objectives.

Responsibilities

  1. Financial Strategy: Develop and execute the financial strategy to support the company’s growth objectives, ensuring alignment with overall business goals and long-term vision.
  2. Capital Planning and Management: Manage the company’s capital structure, including debt and equity financing. Evaluate and recommend strategies for capital raising and other financial decisions.
  3. Treasury Management: Oversee cash flow planning, working capital management, and treasury operations. Optimize cash management practices and ensure efficient utilization of financial resources.
  4. Financial Operations: Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, adherence to accounting principles, and compliance with regulations. Partner with our People Team to process monthly payroll for Canada, US, and UK employees. Assess resourcing needs to support company growth.
  5. Risk Management: Identify, assess, and manage financial risks to protect the company’s assets and ensure compliance with regulations. Implement risk mitigation strategies and internal controls.
  6. Financial Planning and Analysis: Lead the financial planning process, including budgeting, forecasting, and analysis of financial performance. Provide accurate and timely financial reports and insights to the Executive Team, the Board, and Venture Capital Firms.
  7. Investor Relations: Act as a key liaison with investors, analysts, and external stakeholders. Prepare and present financial information for investor meetings, roadshows, and annual reports.
  8. Stay Abreast of Industry Trends: Keep up-to-date with industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes affecting the financial landscape. Apply relevant insights to drive strategic decision-making.
  9. Team Development (Future): Build and mentor a high-performing finance team. Provide guidance, coaching, and professional development opportunities to ensure continuous growth and skill enhancement.

A PL4 is a senior leader responsible for making commitments, developing policies, making high-level decisions, signing important documents, planning workforce requirements, helping shape company-wide strategies, and evaluating organizational success. Keeps up to date on competitors, market trends, and industry standards.

  • Technical Execution: Manages departmental objectives and metrics. Reports quarterly to the Senior Executive team. Is sought out for strategic advice based on expertise.
  • Ownership: Works with the C-Suite to determine strategy, considering business focus, hiring, budgets, and team needs. Contributes to solving cross-functional problems and plans for scaling people and processes.
  • Communication: Facilitates effective communication between the Executive Team and department. Influences decision-making at all levels.
  • Leadership: Drives organizational culture, manages risk, and develops innovative solutions.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Self-aware of impact on team and stakeholders. Recognizes areas for improvement, strengths, and limitations.
  • Business Acumen: Entrepreneurial mindset, helps shape functional goals, and learns cross-functionally to improve collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in finance, accounting, or related field, with CFA; MBA is a plus.
  • Extensive financial expertise in SaaS companies, including accounting principles, budgeting, forecasting, risk management, and financial analysis.
  • 8+ years in senior finance leadership, preferably in SaaS or tech startups. Experience with scaling SaaS companies, team growth, capital raising, and profitability.
  • Strong leadership and cross-functional partnership skills.
  • Proficiency in financial software (Wave, RBC Express, Carta), MS Excel, plus familiarity with Google Suite, Slack, Notion, ADP is a plus.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in investor relations and fundraising.
  • Ability to tell compelling financial stories that inspire confidence and align stakeholders.
